Abstract:

Seaweed is one of the abundant biological resources in Indonesia’s maritime. Red seaweed (Gelidium sp) contains various kinds of bioactive compounds, this bioactive compounds is a potential commodity that can be used as raw material for various industries, including in the pharmaceutical industry. The purpose of this study was to determine the bioactive compounds and pharmacological activity of red seaweed (Gelidium sp). This research was made using the traditional review method. Literature searches were obtained from the PubMed, Science Direct and Google scholar databases with inclusion criteria including the year of publication journal in the period of 2010–2020, in English and Indonesian, full text and accredited by SINTA 1, 2 and 3. Based on the search results, about 31 articles were relevant and met the inclusion criteria. The results of the review of the bioactive content of red seaweed (Gelidium sp) include: mycosporine-like amino acids, natural pigments (carotenoids, pheophorbid A, ficobiliproteins), polyphenols, polysaccharides (agar, carbohydrates, sulfate polysaccharides) and sterols. While the potential pharmacological activities obtained are antibacterial, anti-fungal, anticholesterolemic, hyperlipidemic, antiadipogenic, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antinociceptive, antioxidant, aniadipogenic, antitumor, cholinesterase inhibitor, antiamiloidogenic, edematogenic, neurotropic and cytotoxic.
