The Use Of Jigsaw Method To Improve Reading Comprehension Skill To The Eight Grade Students Of SMPN 1 Kretek Bantul In Academic Year 2018/2019

Abstract

This study aims to improve reading comprehension skill on narrative text by using Jigsaw method for the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kretek in academic years 2018/2019. This study is a classroom action research. The subjects of this study are the English teacher and the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kretek who consist of 28 students; there are 14 female students and 14 male students. The techniques of collecting the data in this study are using pre-test, post-test, and interview. Based on the result of the research, the use of jigsaw as a teaching method can greatly help students in solving problems in learning English especially in learning reading skills. The development of students’ ability can be seen from the increasing score of the students in the tests conducted by the researcher. In pre-test the average of score is 70, meanwhile the result of post-test is 74. We can see that there is an increase between pre-test result and post-test result. The students appreciate the Jigsaw technique because it helps them to understand the text, helps them to collaborate the material with others learners, growth student’s independence, and rise student’s responsibility to answer their work since the students work in a group discussion.
